GUIDELINES

guidelines | process

With so many software applications out there, there are a mind-boggling array of file formats used for saving files. Below is a list of our general guidelines that apply to all projects at Granite Web Design. These guidelines will help speed up the production process and prevent duplication of work due to compatibility issues. We can provide you services for all types of media.

The key is to remember that every file comes in what is called a "format." We try to utilize all formats, but it is better for everyone involved to try to stay with the most common, broadly used types. By doing so, we can help to eliminate "unreadable" files and "corrupted" files for all concerned parties.
 General File Formats:
Audio
Many different formats for digital audio files are in use today across the various computer platforms. The most common formats (indicated below) can be identified by their unique filename extensions and/or by their icons on Macintosh systems.
  Acceptable File Formats:
.wav, .swa, .rmf, .ra, .ram, .mov, .mp3, .mid, .midi
Databases
Granite Web Design strongly recommends Microsoft SQL (Sequel Server) as a choice of database. SQL is recognized as the high-end database solution for most Web developers.

  Acceptable File Formats:
.mdb, .xls, .cgm, .epsf, .pcx, .csv (comma separated value),
.txt (tab delimited, pipe separated, comma separated)
*Please note that tab delimited is highly recommended
Graphics
Now there are hundreds of image formats, although only a handful are actually appropriate for the Internet. And to make things even more confusing, there are additional ways to display pictures including Java, ActiveX, Dynamic HTML and others under development as we speak...
  Acceptable File Formats:
.bmp, .gif, .jpg, .jpeg, .pict, .png, .tiff
Text
May be provided from Microsoft Word, Corel Word Perfect, Adobe Acrobat Writer, Microsoft Wordpad, and Microsoft NotePad. We also offer OCR (optical character recognition) document scanning services for Web related materials.
  Acceptable File Formats:
.pdf, .doc, .wpd, .wpg, .txt, .rtf
Animation - Streaming Media/Video
One of the best ways to add interactivity to a web site is through Flash. Flash is a dynamic multimedia application used to create vector-based graphics and animations. Its capabilities range from creating simple graphics to complex and full featured web sites.

.asf, .asx, .swf, .avi, .mpg, .mpeg, .rm
Additional File Formats
  .art - Clipart
.fla - Macromedia Flash movie format
.emf - Enhanced Windows Metafile
.wmf - Windows Metafile (graphics format).
.zip - Compressed Zip archive
.eps - Encapsulated PostScript supported by most graphics programs
 Web Digital Audio File Formats:
Flash - .swf
Not just an animation format, Flash streams PCM or MP3-compressed audio at various bit rates.
MP3 - .mp2 .mp3
The MPEG Audio Layer 3 format features high-quality digital audio files with excellent compression. MP3 has become the standard for downloadable music. It plays in QuickTime Player 4+, RealPlayer G2 6+, Windows Media Player5.2+, and a whole range of standalone players that work as browser helper apps.
QuickTime - .mov
A QuickTime movie with a soundtrack only.
RealAudio - .ra .ram
The audio component of RealNetworks’ RealMedia. Lots of players. Good quality at low bit rates, but not as good as MP3.
Rich Music Format - .rmf
Beatnik’s hybrid audio/music format. Samples are either PCM or MP3 compressed.
Shockwave Audio - .swa
The audio component of Shockwave, they’re low bit rate MP3 files with a different file header. They stream over HTTP, and any MP3 player can play them locally.
WAV - .wav
Co-developed by Microsoft and IBM, the default audio format for Windows. Uncompressed versions play in browsers, but their use on the Web should be avoided whenever possible.
Windows Media - .asf .asx
  Microsoft’s streaming media solution.
