The number of U.S. households with broadband Internet
connections grew a whopping 41 percent from April 2000
to January 2001climbing to just over 5 million,
according to a study from Harris Interactive. An increase
in DSL subscriptions was a strong contributor to broadband's
growth rate. The number of DSL subscribers more than
doubled from April 2000 to January 2001representing
three-quarters of the growth in total broadband subscriptions.
Everyone wants faster Internet access, and for many,
that means getting DSL. Four factors typically determine
whether you'll be able to get DSL:
- whether your central office (CO) has been upgraded
for DSL
- whether your local loop has a device called a digital
loop carrier
- the distance from your home to your CO
- the quality of your local loop.
