1. How do I use Windows Media on my Web site?

Uploading Your Windows Media Files:

This part cannot be completed until you have received an e-mail confirming your account activation from Granite support.

You will be given access to a directory on a Windows Media server that is the same as the first part of your domain name. For example, if your domain is interland.net we would setup a directory called "interland". This may differ in the event of duplicate directories.

Use any FTP application to transfer your files to the Windows Media server. Files CANNOT be uploaded using FrontPage.
Use the server name you receive in your information e-mail, for example: WindowsMedia3.interland.net, as the remote host address or domain name (depending on the FTP client).
Use your original username and password that Interland assigned you. Even if you have changed your password, you will need to use the original for the Windows Media server.
Once you are logged onto the Windows Media server, find the directory that was setup for your site. Transfer your Windows Media and RealMedia files to that location.

You may create subdirectories within your home directory in order to organize your Windows Media and RealMedia files.

Once your Windows Media files are on the Windows Media server, you will need to create a ASX file to upload to your Web server. The ASX file, when activated, points the ASF files on the Windows Media server. We call it the pointer file. Each ASF file must have a corresponding ASX file. To create a ASX file, open any text editor such as Notepad and type:

for example: mms://netshow1.interland.net/yourdirectory/filename.asf
Be sure to save the file with the .asx extension (welcome.asx). DO NOT SAVE IT AS A TEXT (.TXT) FILE!
Upload the ASX file to your Web server, with the rest of your Web site files. This way it will point requests to the Windows Media server. Do not upload the ASX file to the Windows Media server.

Link your Web site to the ASX file the same as any other HTM or HTML file. For example:

Windows Media Sample

When the link, Windows Media Sample, is clicked on your Web site, it opens welcome.asx. The server recognizes the ASX file as a Windows Media file, and performs the necessary call to the Windows Media server.

That's it! Please refer to http://www.microsoft.com/ for more detailed instructions.
