1. What is a database and how can I incorporate a database with my web site?

1. What is a database?
A simple definition for a database is a large collection of data organized for rapid search and retrieval.

2. How can I make a Web page enter data into a database?
There are many ways of accomplishing this. You can use several scripting languages such as Active Server Pages (ASP) or Cold Fusion to accomplish this. They work very well with HTML code which makes it easier to integrate them into existing Web pages.

You can also use Web Authoring Applications such as FrontPage 2000 or Visual InterDev to accomplish this. They have wizards which will easily enable you to create pages which send data directly to your database.

3. What plan do I have to be on to use databases at Interland?
That depends on what database you wish to use. Our Shared 2 (TrueBasic Plan) includes the capability of using most common file databases such as Access, Paradox, etc.

If you wish to use Visual FoxPro or SQL you will need to be on the Shared 2 (TrueAdvanced Plan) or higher. Please see SQL FAQ for more information on SQL.

4. Why does Interland strongly recommend Microsoft SQL (Sequel
Server) over Microsoft Access?
Although MS Access has been proven to be an inexpensive and simple solution for an online database through MS IIS, it does have its limitations. Small MS Access databases have proven to return queries faster than SQL, but as your MS Access database grows, its limitations will begin to show. MS Access databases can be susceptible to corruption, and its driver can falter when handling high traffic. In a shared environment, users are competing for the resources of the server. MS Access is a major user of local processing power which hinders the performance of the entire server altogether.

SQL is recognized as the high-end database solution for most Web developers. Since Interland offers very affordable rates for SQL accounts, you can take advantage of all what SQL has to offer without great expense. SQL is designed to be secure, stable and robust. It can handle high traffic easily and has built in fault tolerance tools for protection against database corruption. Also, SQL has advanced tools such as stored procedures, scheduling and automated backups. These ensure more productivity and security as database solution. SQL is a must for a mission critical database component for an Internet based enterprise.

Known Issues for MDAC 2.1.2.4202.3 (GA)
This release of the Microsoft Data Access Components contains the following known issue:

Known Issue: ODBC Jet driver in multithreaded environments

Component: ODBC Jet driver

When running in a multithreaded or stress environment such as IIS, it is recommended not to use ODBC because of issues with threading in the driver as well as the Jet engine. The recommendation for this situation is to work with the OLE DB provider for Jet. - Updated: March 13, 2001
